Dell and Microsoft Management Integration Spotlights Potential for Doing More with Less
Dell (NASDAQ:DELL) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) (following on the heels of a similar HP (MYSE:HPQ) and Microsoft announcement) are integrating their respective server and hypervisor systems management products. Integration is a key factor in increasing efficiency: Integrated systems management correlates with up to a 63% staff cost drop in Mean Time to Resolve (MTTR) problems according to participants in Nemertes' service delivery and management research. Considering 97% of participants in Nemertes' Virtualization research are using non-integrated tools, significant efficiency gains are still possible.
Impacts:
Enterprises: Existing tools may work but integrated systems management opens the door to doing more with the same, or doing the same with less.
Vendors: IBM (NYSE:IBM) will need to integrate WebSphere server management with Microsoft, as soon as Hyper-V gains significant marketshare.
Investors: It is getting harder for third-party virtualization management vendors such as privately held Bluebear, ManageIQ and Zenoss to demonstrate the incremental value of their solutions.
