Big Blue's Clues on Virtualization Security

IBM (NYSE:IBM) announced upcoming Virtualization Security (VirtSec) solutions
with its flagship Proventia line of IDS/IPS/UTM security solutions extending
into VMWare's (NYSE:VMW) virtual infrastructure. VirtSec solutions have been the
domain of niche players, underscored by Nemertes' Virtualization Security
Market Analysis
comparing 12 vendor solutions; all are small. IBM's planned
offering is one of the most extensive, covering virtual network, virtual machine
and associated management. Extensibility requires horsepower; the performance
hit on the hypervisor will need to be watched closely.

Impacts:

Enterprises: VirtSec issues are important and require tight integration with
extensible defense that bridges virtual and physical realms.

Vendors: IBM is throwing down a virtual gauntlet to Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO,
Juniper (NASDAQ:JNPR), McAfee (NYSE:MFE) and Symantec (NASDAQ:SYMC).

Investors: This announcements increase the credibility of smaller VirtSec
players like: Stonesoft (OMX: SFT1V) and privately held, Altor, Apani, Blue
Lane, Catbird, Montego, NetIQ, Reflex, Shavlik, Solera, Third Brigade, and
Tripwire.
