Clearing Up Content Management Confusion

EMC (NYSE:EMC), IBM (NYSE:IBM), and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) announced joint
development of Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS), allowing for
interoperability of platforms such as Documentum, Domino, and SharePoint. This
announcement signifies the growing importance of enterprise content management,
and addresses the need to enable seamless access to information stored across
multiple content repositories.

Approximately 57% of participants in the Nemertes' benchmark, Unified
Communications and Collaboration,
are using a content management system,
while another 20% are evaluating systems for deployment. This new specification
will provide for easier content management for mixed vendor environments, as
well for easier migration between systems.

Impacts:

Enterprises: EMC, IBM and/or Microsoft customers should follow the
ratification process and prepare to implement CMIS when finalized.

Vendors: Prepare to support this standard for your content management and
search offerings

Investors: Keep your eye on smaller participants involved in the CMIS
development effort, including privately held Alfresco and Open Text
