Dell's Expanding Services Portfolio
Last week, Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) announced it was adding customizable storage
and disaster management services, including disaster recovery, data back up, and
managed remote backup. Additionally, it's partnering with privately held
GlassHouse Technologies to offer assessment, design and implementation of IT
disaster recovery solutions.
Recent disasters, such as the mid-west flooding, have underscored the need
for solid business continuance/disaster recovery as part of a comprehensive
security policy. According to Nemertes' Security and Information Protection
benchmark, 93% of large enterprises have a security policy in place, but
only two-thirds of small to mid-size organizations do.
Impacts:
Enterprises: No excuses! Whether in-house or fully managed, make sure BC/DR
is part of your security policy.
Vendors: Customers are demanding more individualized services: customization
is the key to success.
Investors: Dell's move and the recently announced HP(NYSE:HPQ) - EDS
(NYSE:EDS) merger puts more competitive pressure on specialized providers like
Rackspace (NYSE:RAX) and privately held SunGuard.
