Gigabit Wifi?
The IEEE 802.11 working group has announced it's preparing to extend the
802.11 standard, currently at 802.11n, to data transfer rates in the gigabit
range. This would give wifi capabilities that are comparable to wired Ethernet
LANs.
Already, 43% of organizations use Wifi infrastructure, according to Nemertes'
Advanced Communications Services benchmark. Increasing Wifi capacity will
provide reason for enterprises to increase their usage of such technology.
Impacts:
Enterprises: Gigabit Wifi will require yet another upgrade to campus Wifi
infrastructure. Begin considering now the impact that such a capability will
have on your mobility planning.
Vendors: Now is a good time to become involved in the IEEE standards efforts.
Investors: Expect an increase in wireless capability within one to two years.
This will increase the demand for wireless solutions and for the companies that
provide them.
