Google Knol Highlights Powers of Web 2.0

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) launched "Knol", a public knowledge repository providing an alternative to Wikipedia. Part wiki, part blog, and part social computing network, Knol is based on publishing author information, while allowing users to rate the quality of the work. While Knol is a public service, it's not hard to imagine how Knol's framework could be applied to enterprise knowledge management needs.

Nearly 70% percent of IT executives participating in the upcoming Nemertes' benchmark, Unified Communications and Collaboration, say their organizations are evaluating or implementing wikis and blogs, Another 64% say they are using or planning to use knowledge management systems.

Impacts:

Enterprises: What's your Web 2.0 strategy? How is it integrating into your knowledge
management strategy? Be ready to answer these questions to improve the availability and management of information within your organization.

Vendors: Web 2.0 knowledge management represents an emerging market space. Look for opportunities to deliver innovative products or integrate with products such as Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) SharePoint and IBM (NYSE:IBM)Lotus Quickr.

Investors: Keep your eye on smaller, innovative privately held companies such as HiveLive, Jive Software and Movable Type.
