Google Phones Home 

Last week saw the long awaited release of the Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) gPhone by
T-Mobile (NYSE: DT). This device incorporates the Google Android open source
platform the delivery of wireless services. Like the Apple iPhone, the gPhone
offers a slick touch-screen interface, but lacks the security and manageability
features that make it ready for business applications. However, the open-source
framework renders it highly likely that these issues will be quickly addressed
by third-party vendors.

Nemertes' Advanced Communications Services benchmark shows that 23% of
enterprises currently support BlackBerry devices. The gPhone could ultimately
provide another option.

Impacts:

Enterprises: Apple's closed architecture makes deploying custom wireless
applications complex. Keep an eye on Android and consider carriers that adopt
it.

Vendors: T-Mobile and Google have thrown down the open platform gauntlet.
Expect others to do the same.

Investors: Google is betting it can dominate wireless Internet access. Expect
competitive responses from Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT).
