McAfee Goes Wider

McAfee (NYSE:MFE) is acquiring Secure Computing (NASDAQ:SCUR) for $465M.
Secure brings solid revenues and 22000 customers (increasing McAfee's base by
about 25%). Although their portfolios overlap, Secure brings gems such as its
reputation-monitoring service for web and email filtering, to a McAfee
interested in filling out a security-as-a-service vision.

Nemertes' Services-Oriented Architectures and Applications benchmark,
found great interest in software-as-a-service (SaaS) offerings, with more than
60% of participants already using SaaS.

Impacts:

Enterprises: Moving some email- and web-security functions off-network can
conserve bandwidth and real-estate in your data centers; evaluate your options.

Vendors: Until network service providers make "clean pipes" ubiquitous, there
is lots of room for innovation in the SaaS space.

Investors: To help both parties compete with combined network and security
vendors such as Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) smaller players including Brocade
(NASDAQ:BRCD) and Extreme (NASDAQ:EXTR) may look to acquire, be acquired by, or
merge with security partners like the new McAfee.
