Nortel Comes Alive Into Virtual Worlds
Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT) acquired DiamondWare, a developer of 3-D voice
positioning technologies to provide a perception of location based on sound.
Nortel is using DiamondWare's technology to enhance its "web.alive" platform for
developing virtual applications to meet specific business needs, such as
training and customer interaction.
According to the Nemertes' benchmark, Advanced Communication Services,
83% of organizations now consider themselves"virtual," meaning employees in
the same group are in physically different locations. Virtual world technologies
can improve collaboration for the virtual workforce.
Impacts:
Enterprises: Look at emerging virtual world technologies as part of your
communication and collaboration strategy.
Vendors: Virtual worlds represent a new, but promising collaboration market
segment. Make sure you have a strategy to compete.
Investors: Keep your eye on privately held Linden Research's "Second Life" as
well as open virtual world efforts, such as the non-profit New Media
Consortium's "Open Virtual Worlds Project."
