Put the Load Right: Librato Load Manager

Privately held Librato announced Load Manager version 2, adding Windows
support to their workload containerization and scheduling tool; version 1
supports only Linux. Load Manager uses a shim between applications and OS to
monitor and control system resource use.

Nemertes' Virtualization benchmark participants use server
virtualization in part to containerize applications. Librato's software, like
Parallels' (privately held) Virtuozzo OS virtualization tool, provides a
different solution to the problem.

Impacts:

Enterprises: Partitioning resources with virtual servers has high overhead.
Consider lighter options, such as Load Manager or Virtuozzo in planning your
strategy.

Vendors: The thin-shim, all-user-mode, no-drivers approach appeals to system
admins. Do users get benefits commensurate with the your products' weight?
Consider slimming down.

Investors: Librato will make an attractive partner or acquisition for
management companies large -- such as IBM (NYSE:IBM) and BMC (NASDAQ:BMC) -- and
small, such as Q-Layer and Cassatt (both privately held).
