Ready or Not? Virtual Iron Releases LivePower Energy Footprint Minimizer

Late this month, privately held VirtualIron will release LivePower, software
to consolidate virtual machines onto the fewest CPUs possible, allowing shutdown
of the rest to conserve power. Although in the long run this software will be
necessary (and for a few organizations might be already), it will be an
unnecessary complication of the environment. Preliminary data from Nemertes'
forthcoming Virtualization benchmark show no participants idling hosts
for anything but maintenance.

Impacts:

Enterprises: Tackle your real virtualization management priorities first.
Unless you have massive fluctuations in load, features like this should be at
the edge of your radar screen, not the center.

Vendors: Other management issues, such as more easily tracking every virtual
machine's provenance, should take precedence.

Investors: Interested in data-center power management? Consider storage.
Privately held Nexsan and COPAN Systems use disk idling to drastically reduce
energy needed to keep rarely-used data on disk.
