Scouting Out Your Virtualization DR Solution

Privately held InMage Systems adds disaster recovery (DR) for Citrix
(NASDAQ:CTXS) XenServer and Microsoft (NASAQ:MSFT) Hyper-V virtualization to
it's existing VMware (NYSE:VMW) ESX/ESXi support. InMage's DR-Scout provides
backup for virtualized environments, including cloning VMs at a remote site as
part of a continuous data protection (CDP)/disaster recovery (DR) solution.

The linkage between DR and virtualization is underscored in Nemertes'
forthcoming Virtualization benchmark, where more than one-third of
participants rate DR as a major virtualization driver.

Impacts:

Enterprises: Virtualization enables disaster recovery. Though native
virtualization tools support some form of DR - VMware (Site Recovery Manager),
Citrix (Pool Replication) and Microsoft (SCVMM), compare closely with
specialized solutions like DR-Scout; the devil's in the details: implementation,
operation and ROI.

Vendors: Follow InMage's lead, offer multi-platform virtualization DR
solutions.

Investors: DR functionality is core to virtualization management.
Consolidation will happen; watch privately held Double-take Software, InMage and
SteelEye.
