The Snake in Apple's Garden
Disclosures of security flaws in the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL). iPhone over the
last two weeks have illuminated an important truth: Business grade is not the
same as consumer grade. Apple's security flaws, which are just irritating to
consumers, are lethal when introduced into business.
Although Nemertes' research shows iPhone's only constitute 1% of the data
devices in use by businesses that support data devices, unless Apple can deliver
an iPhone that is manageable and secure, this adoption is not likely to increase
dramatically.
Impacts:
Enterprises: iPhones are slick and glitzy, but may have severe security and
manageability problems. Look before you leap.
Vendors: iPhones were not designed for business. This is an opportunity to
deliver devices with better business capabilities.
Investors: Watch Apple competitors such as Motorola (NYSE: MOT), Nokia (NYSE:
NOK) and LG (KRX: 066570). They could score big if they deliver an iPhone
equivalent designed for business.
