Stewardship with Class(ification): Kazeon Upgrades

Privately held Kazeon is adding (among other things) data-hold capabilities
to its Information Server platform, enhancing its utility in preserving data for
eDiscovery. Data classification is a core requirement for robust information
stewardship, essential to information lifecycle management, business continuity,
and compliance, hugely useful for information protection and data-quality
management.

Nemertes sees the erosion of IT silos by SOA, SAAS, and virtualization making
data classification and intelligent information stewardship ever more important,
but has consistently found very limited IT use of tools supporting data
classification for information stewardship.

Impacts:

Enterprises: For many IT shops, data hold is challenging because poorly
mapped information lifecycles make it difficult to inform and coordinate the
actions of all necessary admins. Use tools to help.

Vendors: Just as network vendors are moving "up stack" top open new lines of
business addressing the content of the bits they shuffle, so too must storage
vendors. Ally with vendors to make storage systems more useful by making them
more conscious.

Investors: Support for classification and eDiscovery are going to be critical
in storage infrastructures, and pure-play midsize storage vendors, such as
privately held Compellent and Xiotech, may soon go looking for partners or
mergers with companies such as Kazeon.
