Sun SPOTs in the NewsÂ
Sun Microsystems' (NASDAQ: JAVA) SPOT (Small Programmable Object Technology)
is poised to go mobile. Sun is demonstrating small active transponders built on
the SPOT platform which can be used to build active wireless sensors.
Nemertes' study, Internet Singularity Delayed: Why Limits in Internet
Capacity Will Stifle Innovation on the Web, points out that one driver for
Internet demand will be the increase in wireless devices. SPOT will enable a new
class of wireless transponders that ultimately will require network support.
Impacts:
Enterprises: If you are looking for telemetric solutions, the SPOT platform
may be a good way to develop your own, or jump start vendors with whom you
already do business.
Vendors: This technology could serve as the basis for many interesting sensor
applications. Check it out.
Investors: This is an interesting intellectual property upon which many
companies are likely to capitalize.
