Wifi Passé

Sprint's (NYSE: S) announcement that it will begin offering a femtocell
service to consumers last week, takes direct aim at wifi installations that have
become pervasive in the home networking environment. Sprint's solution allows
users to connect both their PCs and their cell phones through the wireless
network, rather than using wifi, a useful feature for teleworkers.

Nemertes' research indicates that about 10% of enterprises are actively
deploying FMC solutions. This low deployment rate has been largly due to the
lack of good carrier based solutions. Sprint's consumer solution may indicate
that carriers are ready to offer better alternatives to business.

Impacts:

Enterprises: Keep an eye on the carriers. If Sprint is moving to femtocell
technology, the other major carriers can be expected to so as well.

Vendors: Once again Sprint is acting to disrupt the market. If you don't have
femtocell in your sights, you will probably want to begin looking at the
technology.

Investors: Expect the other major U.S. carriers, such as AT&T (NYSE: T)
and Verizon (NYSE: VZ), to adopt a femtocell solution quickly in response to
Sprint's offering.
