WiMAX: Small Nibbles, not Big Bites

In spite of dire warnings by various analyst firms concerning the viability
of WiMAX, the technology continues to show promise as a way to enable wireless
broadband access. The recent WiMAX deployments in Jackson, WY, by privately held
DigitalBridge Communications and the deployment in support of the Democratic
National Convention in Denver by privately held Nth Air illustrate that WiMAX
can provide substantial capability for smaller markets.

With Internet access increasingly of concern to public-policy makers,
wireless technologies offer the opportunity to bypass wired access media (see
Nemertes report: The Internet Singularity Delayed). WiMAX looks like a
viable technology for such access.

Impacts:

Enterprises: Keep an eye on WiMAX. While the analyst community focuses on the
big players, smaller companies are beginning to build out the WiMAX
infrastructure.

Vendors: Smaller carriers seem to be good candidates for WiMAX technology.
Targeting WiMAX solutions that allow them to meet customer needs will yield a
positive return.

Investors: WiMAX is not dead yet. Vendors such as privately held Alvarion,
Fujitsu (TSE:6702) and Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) who are building WiMAX technology
for the smaller players will benefit from the small, targeted WiMAX deployments.
