Carrier-Class Consolidation for the Data Center

The SRX Dynamic Services Gateway introduced this week by Juniper Networks
(NYNEX: JNPR) highlights the ongoing trend towards a bifurcation in network
devices, with high-end, high-performance devices dominating the data center,
while easy-to-use, all-in-one boxes rule the branch. In the data center,
scalable performance is king, and the SRX provides routing and multiple security
functions (firewalling, unified threat management, VPNs, intrusion protection)
at rates up to 120 Gbit/s.

Impacts:

Enterprises: Data center architecture requires scalable performance. Consider
the SRX and other data-center specific offerings for futureproofing your
designs.

Carriers: If you’re offering hosted services, consider data-center-specific
secure connectivity solutions.

Investors: The bar for data-center technology continues to rise. Market
dominance here will be based on scalability and performance, not brand
recognition or point-product functionality.
