AFORE: Bingo on Inter-Data Center Ethernet?
AFORE Solutions, a privately held company, offers its Accelerated Secure
Ethernet 3300 (ASE3300) to encrypt and optimize traffic across Ethernet MAN/WAN
connections, especially data center to data center (DC-DC) links. The ASE3300
does wirespeed encryption and up to 10 to 1 compression of Ethernet traffic,
adding error-correction that dramatically reduces retransmits.
Nemertes' Advanced Communications Services benchmark finds 53% of
participants using Etherent WAN services, and 85% planning to begin or increase
use, with DC-DC connectivity a prime target.
Impacts:
Enterprises: Want to span high-speed layer 2 networks across data centers to
facilitate VM migration or Fiber Channel over Ethernet or to avoid routing
iSCSI? Consider Ethernet; evaluate layer 2 optimization.
Vendors: Core network vendors including Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO), Juniper
(NASDAQ:JNPR), and Extreme (NASDAQ:EXTR): match this functionality.
Investor: As networks flatten, Ethernet innovation heats up. Watch AFORE and
others, including Level5 (optimizing NICs) and LightStorm (carrier-grade
Ethernet silicon) as partners or acquisition targets for larger companies.
