Provider's Move to Embarq on IPT Managed Service Underscores Increased Interest

Communications provider Embarq Corporation (NYSE: EQ) is adding managed IP telephony (MIPT) to its portfolio, offering 24x7 monitoring, management and support for customer call servers, media gateways, voicemail servers, routers and switches.

This move highlights growing interest in IPT managed services as organizations struggle with internal IPT management and troubleshooting. Nemertes finds 47% or organizations now use some kind of managed IPT services, up from 33% last year, and likely to continue growing.

Impacts:

Enterprises: Evaluate full or selective managed services when planning IPT strategy.

Providers: The money's in services, and IPT management is a growth area. Winners will offer a wide breadth of services for various vendors products.

Investors: Watch for privately held regional MSPs such as Total Technologies located in TX, Alpheon in NC and BlueWater Communications in NY to compete in this space with strong national/global players such as AT&T (NYSE: T), Verizon (NYSE: VZ), CSC (NYSE: CSC), and Dimension Data (LON: DDT).
