The recent announcement by Red Hat (Nasdaq RHAT) that it plans to acquire privately held JBoss for $420M highlights the rapid acceleration of services-oriented architecture (SOA). The combination of Red Hat (which specializes in enterprise Linux and related solutions), and Jboss (which offers the Jboss Enterprise Middleware System (JEMS) J2EE application server), creates a company that provides an end-to-end SOA infrastructure.

Specifically, the combined companies will be able to offer enterprises almost the entire suite of open-source solutions, including operating system, application servers, and development tools ranging from Java to .NET to PHP.
