Vidyo Emphasizes Increasing Interest in High Definition Video Conferencing

Privately held Vidyo introduced the HD-50 room-based video conferencing system, featuring 720p at 30 FPS high definition resolution at a list price of $1,995 for codec (camera and screen are sold separately). Vidyo's HD-50 takes advantage of the emerging H.264 Scalable Video Coding (SVC) standard to provide high quality images over variably performing networks. Vidyo's announcement highlights growing enterprise interest in high definition video conferencing to improve meeting experiences in light of falling travel budgets.

Fifty-four percent of Nemertes' research participants are using room-based video conferencing for internal and external meetings. Participants note that declining costs are driving their desire to invest in high definition systems either to upgrade existing IP or replace ISDN-based rooms.

Impacts:

Enterprises: Consider HD for rooms and desktops as well as high-end telepresence suites. Falling HD prices have changed the economics for your video conferencing investments.

Vendors: Deliver HD solutions across all end-point types: desktop, room, and telepresence. Look to new technologies such as H.264 Scalable Video Coding (SVC) to provide reliable high definition conferencing even over congested networks.

Investors: Keep your eye on other H.264 SVC plays including Radvision (NASDAQ:RVSN) as well as partners leveraging H.264 SVC including ShoreTel (NASDAQ:SHOR) and privately held Teliris.
