Nemertes PilotHouse Awards

The winners of the Nemertes PilotHouse Awards represent the “movers and shakers” among communications and computing vendors, and their customers, the IT practitioners deploying those technologies.

History and Background

Nemertes has gathered and analyzed customer ratings of IT products and services since 2003. We established the PilotHouse Award Program in 2007. Its purpose is to recognize the top providers of IT products and services.

In today's market, technology buyers are overwhelmed with information on choices for vendor solutions. Nemertes PilotHouse Awards simplify this choice by recognizing companies in a variety of technology markets that demonstrate outstanding achievement and superior performance.

IT decision-makers must determine whether to use a large vendor with sizable market presence or an emerging provider with smaller presence but potentially better innovation and service. The PilotHouse program gathers customer ratings for providers of all sizes, giving decision-makers insight and guidance to select the vendor or service provider that most aligns with company goals.

Nemertes PilotHouse awards are based on primary research through in-depth interviews with IT decision-makers, who rate their vendors based on experiences with them. Nemertes augments these interviews with a broad survey of IT decision-makers. Nemertes then issues PilotHouse awards to those vendors and service providers who score top ratings in all categories.

Vendors:
What makes this Nemertes project so different from any other research available? The results are based 100% on the views and experiences of actual customers. Nemertes’ staff determines the methodology, conducts the research and analyzes the findings. But we have no influence over how any given vendor performs. The opinions rest with real customers. In addition, no vendors sponsor this research.

Innovators:
The Nemertes PilotHouse Innovator Awards recognize organizations making effective use of communications and computing technologies in pursuit of improved application performance, increased agility, and decreased operating costs and environmental impacts that these challenging times demand.

Nemertes gives Innovator awards to select benchmark research participants based on a multi-faceted matrix, the Nemertes Technology Scorecard, that assigns points to an organization based on deployment data such use of emerging services and applications, low total cost of ownership, and demonstrable business value. No vendor sponsored this research or influenced construction of the scorecard.

Non-Clients:
Innovator Award Reports are only available to Nemertes retainer clients. For information on becoming a client, please contact us.

PilotHouse FAQ

How Do IT Buyers Rate Their Vendors?

Each year as part of our PilotHouse award program, Nemertes contacts several thousand IT professionals to uncover their experiences with the vendors, products and technologies they deploy. This guide brings together the insights provided by the PilotHouse program in a single document that includes ratings for providers of a range of communications, computing and security products.

The Nemertes PilotHouse data-center network and server management award covers companies selling software (or appliances) that help IT monitor and manage the servers and networks contained in their data centers.

Vendors Rated:

The Nemertes PilotHouse award for Data-Center Firewalls recognizes firewall solutions designed to protect and serve the special needs of data centers. The sensitive nature of the data contained in data centers and the sheer volume of network traffic/requests for the data therein requires outstanding firewalls. IT professionals who use these services rated their providers on technology, value, and customer service.

The Nemertes PilotHouse award for Wireless Voice & Data Services recognizes cellular carriers who provide services such as calling, texting and 3G/4G data. 3G technologies in the U.S. include Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM)-defined High Speed Packet Access (HSPA), and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA)’s Evolution Data Optimized (EVDO). 4G technologies include Long Term Evolution (LTE) and Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX).

Vendors Rated:

The Nemertes PilotHouse award for Internet Access Services recognizes Internet Service Providers (ISPs) offering business Internet connectivity services based on technologies such as TDM, DSL, cable, fiber and wireless. IT professionals who use these services rated their providers on technology, value, and customer service.

ACS

The Nemertes PilotHouse award recognizes Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) solutions. While the baseline technology is set in stone via the IEEE 802.11x standards, vendors choose to differentiate themselves in a variety of ways, including architecture, management tools, and security, antennae, and advanced routing features. IT professionals who use these products rate their providers on technology, value, and customer service.

Vendors Rated:

The Nemertes PilotHouse award for Managed Internet Services recognizes a variety of managed Internet solutions geared specifically toward businesses looking to outsource their Internet access needs. IT professionals who use these services rated their providers on technology, value, and customer service.

The Virtual Desktops award recognizes excellence in solutions for managing delivery of centrally provisioned virtual desktops. It encompasses, therefore, not just the hypervisor vendors providing the platform underlying virtual desktops (as well as the Virtual Desktop tools atop them) but also those third parties packaging management solutions layered on top of such systems.

The Nemertes PilotHouse award for Servers for Virtualization recognizes makers of servers used as hosts for virtual machines, the main kind of server now being deployed. Standalone, dedicated physical servers have become not just a minority in the data center, but a small fraction of new servers purchased. IT professionals who use these servers rated their vendors on technology, value, and customer service.

The Nemertes PilotHouse award for Hosted Voice Over IP (VOIP) recognizes service providers who offer IP-based voice services as a hosted service. In a hosted VOIP service, the provider owns and operates the equipment, such as IP PBXs, gateways, and servers, and also may provide SIP trunking. Customers then buy voice capabilities from service providers typically for a fixed, monthly fee. IT professionals who use these services rated their providers on technology, value, and customer service.

The Nemertes PilotHouse award for IP Contact Center (IPCC) recognizes IP contact-center vendors that offer solutions such as Automatic Call Distribution (ACD), Integrated Voice Response (IVR), Computer Telephony Integration (CTI), and related applications over an IP-based service. IT professionals who use these products rated their providers on technology, value, and customer service.

The Nemertes PilotHouse award for Managed Firewall/Intrusion Detection System (IDS)/Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) recognizes vendors providing a managed firewall and security service. Many enterprises are finding it beneficial to outsource firewall and security expertise instead of maintaining an in-house solution. IT professionals who use these services rated their providers on technology, value, and customer service.

The Nemertes PilotHouse award for MPLS Services recognizes WAN (Wide Area Network) services based on MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) technology, offering a range of connectivity service classes to suit enterprise needs. IT professionals who use these services rated their providers on technology, value, and customer service.

ACS

The Nemertes PilotHouse award for Managed Router Services recognizes services designed to manage any portion of an enterprise-owned switch/router infrastructure. IT professionals who use these services rated their providers on technology, value, and customer service.

The Nemertes PilotHouse award for Managed IP Telephony services recognizes managed-service solutions used in a partially or fully enterprise-owned IP telephony infrastructure. Third parties provide varying levels of maintenance, management, and troubleshooting for IP telephony equipment, and sometimes the associated network infrastructure to effectively operate an IP communications network. IT professionals who use these services rated their providers on technology, value, and customer service.

The Nemertes PilotHouse award for SIP Trunking Services recognizes Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) solutions used to trunk, or provide access from enterprise telephony systems into the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). IT professionals who use these services rated their providers on technology, value, and customer service.

The Nemertes PilotHouse award for Small Branch Firewalls recognizes firewall solutions that cater to the small businesses and branch offices of larger enterprises. Within these environments, sensitive data is equally important as it is at the data-center of a large enterprise, but less traffic is generally expected to pass through the firewall. IT professionals who use these services rated their providers on technology, value, and customer service.

The Nemertes PilotHouse award for Carrier Ethernet Services recognizes service providers delivering Ethernet point-to-point, multipoint, and/or WAN/VPLS services. IT professionals who use these services rated their providers on technology, value, and customer service.

ACS

The Nemertes PilotHouse award for Software as a Service (SaaS): Office recognizes office-in-the-cloud applications providing messaging, document, spreadsheet, presentation, file sharing, and other hosted-collaboration tools. IT professionals who use these services rated their providers on technology, value, and customer service.

The Nemertes PilotHouse award for Application Delivery Optimization (ADO) recognizes ADO appliances (physical or virtual) that optimize application delivery working from within the network. ADO solutions may cache, compress, accelerate, shape, or condition network traffic—the province of the traditional WAN optimizer—or they may do server load balancing and offload—traditional application delivery controller functions. ADO solutions may layer on any number of additional functions, for example application visibility and usage reporting, or access control, content filtering, or other security tasks. IT professionals who use ADO solutions rate their providers on technology, value, and customer service.
