Nemertes Impact Analysis: IBM Lotus Sametime Gateway Announcement Underscores Importance of Connected Instant Messaging

IBM Lotus (NYSE:IBM) last week introduced Sametime Gateway, enabling Sametime users to communicate with other Sametime systems as well as with users of public IM services including AOL, and Google Talk, or any IM system based on the eXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP). Support for interconnection with Yahoo Messenger was also announced, but will not be available for several more weeks. Sametime Gateway is available at no extra charge to existing Sametime 7.5 license holders. Interconnection with Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s Windows Live Messenger IM service or Live Communications Server IM platform is not available.

This announcement will help organizations establish secure and manageable connectivity between their private IM systems and users of external public or private IM services.
