Wireless gets Social
Nokia ( NYSE: NOK) has announced that it is acquiring privately held Plazes,
a small software company building presence enabled social activity services.
As the recent release of the business iPhone illustrates, social computing
capabilities and slick Web 2.0 applications are where the value is in wireless.
Nokia's move is one indication that wireless device vendors may trying to play
catch up by adding iPhone-like capabilities to their devices.
Impacts:
Enterprises: Social computing, once desktop centric, is now moving to
wireless devices. If you don't have a plan for social computing, now would be a
good time to start.
Vendors: Social computing will likely drive demand for lots of wireless
bandwidth. The winners in the new space will be the ones whose networks can
handle the loads.
Investors: Look for more mergers and acquisitions as wireless infrastructure
providers move to beef up their Web 2.0 capabilities.
