Trying to Build a New Progress-ive Era: Progress Buys Iona, Mindreef

Progress Software (NASDAQ:PRGRS) is buying, not one, but two other
service-oriented architecture (SOA) companies: Iona (NASDAQ:IONA) and privately
held Mindreef. Iona's Orbix and FUSE middleware will complement Progress's own
Sonic line, and Mindreef brings with it SOA testing tools and design-time
governance.

Progress' actions, like SOA Software's (privately held) recent acquisition of
LogicLibrary, are in line with Nemertes' findings. In Nemertes' benchmark,
Service-Oriented Architectures and Applications, Nemertes advises
pure-play SOA vendors to merge with other similar vendors to expand their
coverage of the space and share of the market in order to counter the SOA heft
of application and platform vendors like Microsoft and Oracle.

Impacts:

Enterprises: No immediate impact on those using Progress, Iona, or Mindreef
products. Progress is keeping all lines alive for a while and the consolidation
helps ensure the continued viability of all the products.

Vendors: Next time the music stops, will there be a chair for you to sit on?
Partner up, either with another SOA tools vendor or with a platform vendor!

Investors: Other smaller SOA vendors, especially in governance and security,
such as privately held Amberpoint and Forum Systems, will be next.
