Apple iPhone: Open for Business

Last weeks' big event was the release of the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) 3G iPhone.
With higher available data rates and the ability to synchronize iPhone with
Microsoft Office Exchange servers, both Apple and AT&T (NYSE: T) are hoping
that the new phone will appeal to business customers.

As Nemertes has pointed out in its Next Generation Wireless report,
business customers will be interested in the iPhone to the extent that it will
support business applications. It is still not clear how open the iPhone is or
to what extent AT&T will support applications developed on it.

Impacts:

Enterprises: Caveat Emptor. Although it is appropriate to look at the iPhone,
it is premature to build much business functionality on it.

Vendors/ISVs: The iPhone combined with useful business applications will be a
killer combo. Time to start looking at the iPhone platform.

Investors: The iPhone will only resonate with business if it supports open
application development. Take a look and see approach as developers build
applications specific for the enterprise market.
