IPv6 NAT Underscores Migration Difficulties

The Internet Engineering Taskforce (IETF) will discuss IPv6 NAT (network
address translation) at its July meeting. The lack of IPv6 NAT has limited
adoption among enterprises accustomed to using NAT to hide internal network
configurations from the Internet.

The lack of enterprise interest in IPv6 is underscored by IT executives
participating in the Nemertes' benchmark, Advanced Communications
Services, 69% of whom have no plans to deploy IPv6.

Impacts:

Enterprises: For most enterprises a business case for IPv6 does not yet
exist. Continue to monitor IPv6 developments as part of your long-term planning
activities

Vendors: Absent large demand for IPv6, there is little justification in
bringing IPv6 solutions to market. Continue to build out your IPv6 portfolios
and look for specific opportunities, such as in meeting U.S federal government
compliance mandates.

Investors: Keep your eye on IPv6 service offerings from companies such as NTT
America (NYSE:NTT) and Global Crossing (NASDAQ:GLBC) as early bellwethers for
IPv6 adoption.
