OS Wars in the Wireless Space
Last week's flap over Google (NASDAQ, GOOG) censorship of anti-Android
comments underscores the intensity of the struggle now taking place to define a
standard, open operating system for wireless mobile devices.
As Nemertes' upcoming Unified Communications and Collaboration
benchmark report discloses, more than 66% of companies either have, or are
developing mobility strategies. Ensuring that mobile applications are built on
open platforms will become an important part of these evolving strategies.
Impacts:
Enterprises: Open operating systems equates to mobility flexibility. Insist
on an open OS when engaging with carriers.
Carriers: The market is speaking. Adopting an open OS is required to be
competitive. Insist that your OS vendor is also open about its OS flaws, as well
as virtues. Customers do not like surprises.
Investors: Google is playing hard ball with its operating system. This is
contrary to what open is about, and could drive carriers away from adopting the
new OS.
