Digium: Low cost VOIP for SMBs
Privately held Digium Inc. announced the release of a new, low cost IP-PBX
offering aimed SMBs. The AA300 Supports 1-150 users, and runs on Asterisk as its
core VOIP platform.
A vast majority of SMBs are doing something regarding VOIP. In Nemertes'
upcoming Unified Communications and Collaboration benchmark, 57% of SMBs
completed their VOIP rollouts, 26% are in the process of implementing, and 10.7%
have plans to deploy within two years.
Impacts:
Enterprises: When evaluating VOIP technology vendors, be sure to include
lower-cost open source solutions.
Vendors: Low cost offering such as this are attractive to customers at the
small end of the SMB space (under 250), who tend to have less sophisticated
requirements in terms of features, contact center requirements, etc.
Investors: Low-cost, bare-bones offerings such a these put pressure on the
large vendors vying for customers in the SMB space, such as Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO)
and privately held Avaya.
