UMB: The new Betamax?

Privately held Aircell announcement that it will deploy LTE (Long Term
Evolution) based wireless in airlines by 2011 is yet another nail in the coffin
for UMB (Ultra Mobile Broadband) based pre-4G solutions. With most major
domestic carriers defining their wireless evolution in terms of LTE, this simply
ensures that wireless carriers are going to need an LTE solution in order to
compete in the wireless business market.

As Nemertes' benchmark volume, Next Generation Wireless, points out,
wireless standards are increasingly important to business. LTE in aircraft will
cement this standard as a business enabler.

Impacts:

Enterprises: LTE will be everywhere by the end of 2011. Begin planning
mobility solutions to take this into account.

Vendors: If you aren't thinking LTE, you should start.

Investors: LTE will be the de facto standard for wireless. Carriers will need
LTE based solutions to remain competitive.
