Nemertes Impact Analysis:
Google Highlights Collaboration's Rising Tide with Wave
Google introduced "Wave", part e-mail, part shared-workspace, and part development community, as an attempt to redefine messaging as a collaboration platform. Wave reflects the need for better collaboration among distributed workers and workgroups.
Nemertes' research has consistently shown that 90% of organizations consider themselves virtual with teams distributed across offices, regions, or countries. Meanwhile, efforts to cut costs have led to a growth in telework, with 86% of participants now saying they support at-home workers. As workgroups disperse, the need for effective communication and collaboration tools increases. Thirty-three percent of participants note that communication and collaboration spending is recession-proof, while 47% are using or evaluating software-as-a-service applications to better support virtual workers while reducing costs.
Impacts:
Enterprises: Keep your eye on Wave's development and expect to see Wave-like functionality extend to traditional enterprise applications.
Vendors: Evaluate the Google Wave Federation Protocol Community for potential participation. Look to incorporate Wave-like functionality into your own collaboration offerings.
Investors: Google's Wave has the potential to create a new ecosystem around it's platform. Carefully monitor announcements of third-party offerings and the growth of the Wave community.
