Nemertes Impact Analysis:
Core4 Highlights the Need for More Efficient CRAC
Core4 Systems is introducing Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units, claiming average power usage efficiency (PUE) of 1.25, i.e. a 25% power overhead between power feed and IT use. Industry average PUE is 2-3 indicating a potential 38 - 58% drop in total power usage for the same IT power load. Fifty-nine percent (59%) of organizations currently face CRAC challenges, according to participants in Nemertes' data center research. Nearly half (47%) of these organizations address these problems by improving power efficiency and airflow/heat exchange reengineering. Core4 has an uphill battle convincing organizations to replace industry leaders, APC (EPA:SU) and privately held Liebert or smart cooling technology from IBM (NYSE:IBM) and HP (NASDAQ:HPQ).
Impacts:
Enterprise: Know your PUE. Measuring efficiency gains e.g. of HVAC conversions requires close monitoring.
Vendors: Core4 is a partnering, OEM, or acquisition target by an organization with a strong channel and high credibility among data center operators.
Investors: Alternative cooling technologies and efficiency software, such as privately held Ancis Incorporated, Core4, GDCM and SprayCool are all potential investment or acquisition candidates.
