Impact Analysis: Watchfire Acquisition of Sanctum Highlights Emerging Information-Protection Trends

August 5, 2004

By Johna Till Johnson, President & Chief Research Officer, Nemertes Research

The recent acquisition last month of privately held Sanctum by privately held Watchfire illustrates two critical trends in the areas of security and information stewardship. Watchfire specializes in managing Web site information quality, privacy, compliance and user quality of experience. Sanctum offers a suite of products that ensure Web application security.

The acquisition’s significance is twofold. First, it highlights the gathering momentum towards a security model that’s predicated not solely on securing the perimeter, but on embedding security functionality and protocols throughout the entire architecture. We believe that the “defense-in-depth” model is rightfully in the ascendance, and will represent the dominant security paradigm within the next 12-18 months.
