Impact Analysis: Information Stewardship Starts with Good Data

Aug. 19, 2004

By Melanie Turek, Nemertes principal analyst

News this week from DataFlux Corporation supports Nemertes’ long-standing recommendation that companies pay closer attention to the quality of the data in the enterprise. The newly available DataFlux dfConnector for SAP lets companies correct, standardize and verify data in real time as new information is entered into the SAP/R3 system.

The solution is designed to reduce the number of errors caused by simple data entry problems. When a new record is created within SAP, dfConnector for SAP can initialize DataFlux data management routines to standardize and validate the data according to existing business rules, including automatically detecting duplicate records and standardizing corporate data such as product codes and item descriptions.

Information stored in ERP and CRM systems from the likes of SAP—including customer information, product data, and transactional details—is increasingly business critical. Yet IT executives say that the accuracy of that data is often questionable—which puts companies at risk both for lost revenue and, increasingly, for fines and other penalties resulting from failure to comply with government regulations.
