The Enterprise in the Public Cloud
The enterprise is moving into the public cloud with great gusto. Adoption of both Software as a Service (SaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is rising extremely fast. More large organizations than small are adopting these services. With this growth comes significant challenge. IT has limited control over SaaS and even less control over SaaS budgets. This is a huge governance risk and compliance issue. Because IT faces significant these issues, the technology is limited mostly to application development workloads. Data-center planners and architects are clear: Production workloads are staying in-house, calling into question the whole concept of a hybrid cloud and cloudbursting where production workloads move from private cloud to public cloud on a dynamic basis. The good news is organizations with the most SaaS are reigning in SaaS control. The not-so-good news is IaaS implementations are only moderately successful. The complexity of moving to IaaS and getting all the right parts working, and working together is holding back IaaS success for many organizations.
