Video Conferencing: Beyond the Firewall

Video conferencing remains a technology in transition. Its promise as a means to improve collaboration remains constrained by integration issues with desktop, room, and immersive telepresence systems; lack of demand; and fears of bandwidth costs required to make video conferencing at the desktop ubiquitous. Still, video deployments are growing, albeit at a slower rate than marketing hype would indicate. And consumer services are offering an alternative for some who are willing to expect less reliable performance. IT leaders should continue to develop their video trends and look at ways to overcome bandwidth challenges while enabling broader capabilities for cross-company conferencing.
