As research analyst and consultant, John draws on his past experience as a practitioner and director of IT to better understand the needs of IT executives and the challenges facing vendors trying to sell to them. His experience has given him broad and deep knowledge in computing, communications, and IT management.
John’s experience centers around high-level IT management positions in higher education. He directed the staff in the voice and data network, desktop support, and systems management groups at the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul). John also worked in IT management and systems and network administration posts at The College of St. Catherine (St. Paul). He has experience in the application of technology at The Johns Hopkins University, where he supported the engineering faculty in its use of IT in research and teaching.
As an established speaker, John has appeared as presenter and moderator at Interop, IDG’s IT Roadmap and Tech Target events, as well as private events for Cisco, AT&T, and other vendors, around subjects including the new data center and the private cloud, desktop and server virtualization, security, optimization, and information stewardship. John writes frequently for Network World, Tech Target, and other media sources.
John holds a masters degree in the history of science and a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, both from The Johns Hopkins University. He devotes his spare time to family, urban gardening, bird watching, and wild mushroom hunting.
