Zend AppFabric, Infor Mongoose in Amazon show expanding interest in PaaS

May 2, 2012
With social and mobile platforms driving renewed interest in custom applications, interest in platform as a service is surging. Privately held Zend and Infor are bringing their respective platforms (for development and hosting of PHP and .Net applications, respectively) to Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) cloud infrastructure. Just over 14% of companies develop for iPhone already, for example, and more than 5% for Android. Agile development and scalable infrastructure can be key to successfully deploying such applications.

Impacts:

Enterprises: If you are planning on getting back into developing your own apps (or having them developed for you), examine PaaS offerings such as these.

Vendors: Your application development and hosting platforms need to make the transition to cloud.

Investors: Watch smaller privately held PaaS vendors such as DotCloud, ActiveState, and Engine Yard as possible targets for acquisition by larger players such as Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL) or Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO).
